Set To Go The Way Of Myspace?Facebook Could Lose '80 percent Of Users By 2017

Researchers predict Facebook could lose 80 per cent of users by 2017 [GETTY] Researchers at Princeton University predict the firm co-founded by Mark Zucerkberg will experience a rapid decline in users between 2015 and 2017. The forecast was made by comparing the growth and decline of online social networks to that of epidemics like the bubonic plague. The study says: "Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out, and have been successfully described with epidemiological models.

A study by Princeton University claims Facebook will experience a steep decline of users [GETTY] Ideas, like diseases, have been shown to spread infectiously between people before eventually dying out The study "Ideas are spread through communicative contact between different people who share ideas with each other. Idea manifesters ultimately lose interest with the idea and no longer manifest the idea, which can be thought of as the gain of 'immunity' to the idea." Authors John Cannarella and Joshua Spechler used what is known as the SIR (susceptible, infected, recovered) model of disease.

It was tested against other sites like Myspace which the authors said shows how the adoption and abandonment of a social network can mimic the spread of a disease. Facebook recently said it had experienced a decline in daily users especially among young teens [AP] The study also charted the number of times Facebook has been typed into Google as a search term.

Their research showed that searches for Facebook peaked in December 2012 and have since started to trail off. Recently Facebook's chief financial officer David Ebersman said the site had seen a decrease in its daily users specifically among the "younger teens".
